John Ashton, famous for his memorable role in the Beverly Hills Cop series, has passed away at the age of 76. His manager, Alan Somers, confirmed to Us Weekly that Ashton died on Thursday, September 26, in Fort Collins, Colorado.
“John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. His memory will always be cherished by his wife, children, grandchildren, as well as his brother, sisters, extended family, and all who loved him,” Somers stated to Us on Sunday, September 29. “John’s influence on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations.”
Ashton made a significant impact on Hollywood with his portrayal of Detective Sergeant John Taggart alongside Eddie Murphy’s legendary character, Axel Foley, in Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), and the Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024).
In the latest film, Ashton’s character transitions from detective sergeant to police chief. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F follows Axel Foley’s mission to safeguard his daughter and former partner from a nefarious plot.
The film sees the return of original cast members Judge Reinhold and Bronson Pinchot, while also featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon.
Ashton often shared his love for the franchise on his personal website long before the release of the fourth film. His passion and commitment to the series have made his character a vital part of its lasting success.
