Victony Transforms Adversity into Art with ‘Stubborn’ Debut Album
Nigerian artist Victony has released his debut album ‘Stubborn,’ featuring collaborations with Teezo Touchdown, Saint JHN, Asake, and others, bringing his unique Afropop sound to a wider audience.
Three years have passed since a nearly fatal car accident took the life of one of Victony’s close friends and left him severely injured. The traumatic experience, which required him to undergo intensive surgery and relearn how to walk through physical therapy, has deeply influenced his outlook on life.
Born Anthony Victory, the 23-year-old musician channeled his resilience into creating ‘Stubborn,’ which became available on streaming platforms on June 21. “The album is about overcoming adversity and turning life’s challenges into powerful art,” Victony explained to Billboard. “I want listeners to feel a shared experience and find strength and hope in their own journeys.”
‘Stubborn’ features a diverse group of collaborators, some of whom are exploring the Afrobeats genre for the first time. The album includes contributions from Teezo Touchdown, Saint JHN, Asake, Shallipoppi, and Shorae.
One highlight is “Slow Down,” a disco-influenced track with Teezo Touchdown. “We connected immediately, and the session was filled with experimentation,” Victony said. “We aimed to create something that made people move but also resonated deeply.”
Saint JHN accelerated Victony’s creative process, earning the title of the “quickest” artist Victony has ever recorded with after meeting in Los Angeles. Their collaboration, “Tiny Apartment,” explores themes of intimacy, a common thread in Saint JHN’s work.
Victony aims to elevate the global Afropop scene, viewing it as an “opportunity rather than pressure” to make an impact. A closer look at the album credits reveals the involvement of Olamide Baddo, an influential African rapper and mentor who played a significant role in bringing the project together.
This summer, Victony will reconnect with his fans on the Stubborn Tour, which begins in Boston on August 8 and will include stops in New York City, Toronto, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and more.
