In a recent episode of the Tea with Tay Podcast, global singing sensation Yemi Alade offered a candid glimpse into her upbringing, sharing insights into her experiences growing up in a multicultural home. The podcast episode delved into her personal life, uncovering the singer’s unique perspective on cultural diversity and family dynamics.

Yemi Alade, often hailed as “Mama Africa,” recounted her childhood with a Yoruba father and an Igbo mother, describing her home as a blended family where cultural differences were not immediately apparent. With a warm smile, she reflected on her early years, emphasizing the simplicity of her perception of family.

“I didn’t know that there was a difference growing up. First of all, I just had my mum and my dad. We were one of those families that had uncles, aunties, and cousins living with us. My dad was that kind of person, so we had people around,” shared Yemi Alade.

She continued by recounting instances where people outside her family tried to categorize her into specific ethnic groups, often not in the most flattering ways. The singer became aware of the cultural disparities when individuals would debate whether she was Yoruba or Igbo.
